letter from the president
Dear Severna Park Elementary School Parents,
I hope this message finds you and your family well. At this unprecedented time, it is difficult to find words that comfort, particularly for parents of kindergarteners and those new to SPES. Hopefully, it helps to know that we are all going through this at the same time, and the day will come where we will all celebrate our children physically going back to school.
The PTA’s mission has always been to support our school community, and we are committed to continuing to do that to the best of our ability. Every year, with your support, we run numerous well-loved programs and events: the ice cream social, kindergarten popsicle playdate, boys and girls events, Spring Fair, Chessie Reading Program and the Bobcat Book Club, Variety Show, Performing Arts assemblies, Birthday books, Bare Books, Artist-in-Residence, Boone’s Backyard, funding for teacher training, teacher & staff appreciation events, recess & PE equipment, and classroom reading supplies to name a few. For 2020-21, in addition to all the activities listed, we had other great initiatives lined up: a school-wide composting and recycling program, shade for the playground, and the completion of the Boone’s Backyard outdoor classroom. Unfortunately, we have had to put these all on hold for the moment.
While we would love nothing more than to run these events this year, the enthusiastic and committed team of PTA Committee Chairs is rethinking how to best support our community. As always, we appreciate your input and would love to hear any suggestions, concerns, or ideas you have. We know that you appreciate that our hard-working committee heads are volunteers and like many of you, will also be supporting their children’s online learning in the fall.
In the past we have funded our programs through our annual “Invest in your Child” campaign, our direct donation program that allows us to bring great programming to our school. Since we will not be able to run many of our programs, and we realize that this pandemic has caused financial strain for many, we have decided not to ask for any donations from parents at this time. Depending on how the second half of the school year goes, we may revisit this and ask for your financial support at a later date.
It is my sincere hope that we will be able to return to our normal operations for the second half of the year and will be able to resume our many programs. Until then, stay healthy!
